Aerith: Long ago, Sephiroth summoned a giant meteor to crash here...It did crash and many cities were destroyed, but before it could complete its job, a materia called Holy destroyed it and Sephiroth at the same time.
(Yeah, that's differnet from the game, but who cares.)
